In the 21st century, we find ourselves in a new world. Without meaning to, we can change the way our planet works. At the same time, we are developing a much deeper understanding of Earth's Operating System. This chapter introduces systems thinking and three principles that explain how planet Earth works in terms of cycles of matter, flows of energy and the web of life.
